What Is Handwriting Analysis?

Handwriting analysis, commonly associated with graphology, involves examining characteristics and patterns in a person’s handwriting and interpreting them in relation to personality and behavioural tendencies.

For many people, handwriting is simply a way to put thoughts on paper.

For handwriting analysts, however, features such as writing size, spacing, slant, pressure, baseline and letter formations can be studied as part of an overall handwriting profile.

Rajesh S. Kothari has spent years working in this field, helping students, professionals, entrepreneurs, organisations and others explore handwriting-based behavioural insights.

From Mechanical Engineering to Graphology

One of the most interesting aspects of Rajesh’s story is his professional journey.

A Mechanical Engineer by profession, Rajesh spent more than 30 years working in Alternate Fuel Technology before pursuing his passion for handwriting analysis and personality assessment.

His transition demonstrates how professional journeys can evolve over time.

Sometimes, our first career is not necessarily where our curiosity ends.

Rajesh eventually dedicated himself to graphology, signature analysis, graphotherapy and personality related work.

Perhaps the most exciting part of our conversation was the intersection of Graphology and Artificial Intelligence.

Rajesh is associated with the development of an AI powered handwriting analysis platform designed to generate detailed personality insights and SWOT analysis using deep learning technology.

This changes the conversation in an important way.

Traditional handwriting analysis can involve manual observation and interpretation.

AI introduces the possibility of:

AI is already changing recruitment.

From sourcing candidates to resume screening, interview scheduling and talent analytics, technology is increasingly becoming part of the hiring ecosystem.

AI powered handwriting analysis represents another potential application.

But recruitment decisions have real consequences for people’s careers.

That means technology should ideally support human decision making rather than replace thoughtful human judgement.

Any assessment technology used in recruitment needs to be considered in terms of relevance, reliability, fairness, privacy and appropriate use.

The future of hiring is unlikely to be about finding one magical tool that tells us everything about a candidate.

Instead, it may be about combining multiple sources of relevant information while keeping the human element at the centre.

Some Key Questions for Recruiters

The conversation with Rajesh left me with several questions that recruiters and HR leaders can think about:

Probably not. People are complex and different assessment methods capture different aspects.

2. Should technology replace interviews?

Technology can support hiring, but human interaction remains an important part of understanding candidates.

3. How should AI based assessments be validated?

Before using an assessment for consequential decisions, organisations need to understand its methodology, evidence and limitations.

4. What happens to candidate data?

Handwriting is personal data. Organisations using digital handwriting analysis need to think carefully about privacy, consent, security and data handling.

5. Can unconventional assessment methods complement traditional recruitment?

That is an area worth exploring, provided the methods are appropriately validated and used responsibly.

What I Took Away From This Conversation

For me, the biggest takeaway from Expert Talk Episode 177 was not simply about handwriting.

It was about how we understand people.

Recruitment has always involved trying to look beyond a CV.

As technology develops, we will continue to see new approaches for understanding skills, behaviour, personality and potential.

Some will prove useful.

Some may need more evidence.

And some may not be appropriate for certain decisions.

The responsibility of HR professionals is to remain curious while also asking the right questions about evidence, ethics and practical relevance.
