Artificial Intelligence is changing the world faster than ever before. From automating business operations to transforming communication, decision-making and learning, AI is becoming an integral part of our personal and professional lives.
But as machines become smarter, an important question deserves our attention:
In a world driven by Artificial Intelligence, what makes human intelligence truly valuable?
The answer lies in something that technology still struggles to replicate meaningfully: Emotional Intelligence.
The ability to understand emotions, show empathy, manage reactions, build relationships and connect with people is becoming increasingly important. Whether in leadership, business, education, parenting or everyday relationships, emotional intelligence influences how we interact with the world.
This was the central theme of an insightful conversation in Expert Talk Episode 180, featuring Varsha Ganesh, a Psychologist, Empowerment Coach, Trainer, Teacher, Chartered Accountant, TEDx Speaker and Amazon Bestselling Author.
Our discussion explored emotional intelligence, human behaviour, subconscious patterns and why being human matters more than ever in the age of AI.

Emotional Intelligence, commonly known as EQ, is the ability to recognise, understand and manage our own emotions while also understanding and responding appropriately to the emotions of others.
Intellectual Intelligence helps us analyse information, solve problems and make logical decisions. Emotional Intelligence helps us understand how we feel, why we react in certain ways and how our behaviour affects others.
Consider a workplace situation.
An employee makes a mistake. A manager with strong intellectual intelligence may quickly identify the problem and explain what went wrong.
However, a manager with emotional intelligence will also understand the employee’s emotional state, communicate constructively and help the person learn from the experience.
Both approaches have value, but combining them creates better leadership.
Emotional intelligence is not about suppressing emotions or always being pleasant. It is about understanding emotions and choosing how to respond.
One interesting aspect of our conversation with Varsha Ganesh was understanding why people sometimes repeat the same behavioural and emotional patterns.
Have you ever reacted strongly to a situation and later wondered why you responded that way?
Perhaps a simple comment made you angry. Maybe criticism affected your confidence. Or a disagreement reminded you of an unpleasant past experience.
These reactions are not always connected to the situation in front of us.
Sometimes, our responses are influenced by earlier experiences, learned behaviours, beliefs and subconscious patterns.
When we repeatedly respond in the same way, we may unknowingly create challenges in our relationships and professional lives.
The first step towards change is recognising these patterns.
Instead of asking, “Why does this always happen to me?”, we can begin asking:
Self awareness helps us understand the difference between what happens to us and how we choose to respond.

One of the valuable ideas discussed in this episode was the Three-Step Pause technique.
In our everyday lives, we often react immediately without giving ourselves enough time to understand the situation.
A difficult conversation, an unexpected email, criticism from a colleague or a disagreement at home can trigger an emotional response.
The Three-Step Pause encourages us to create space between an emotional trigger and our reaction.
The process can be understood through three simple actions:
Step 1: Pause
Stop for a moment instead of responding immediately. Give yourself time to move away from an impulsive reaction.
Step 2: Recognise
Identify what you are feeling. Are you angry, disappointed, anxious, hurt or frustrated? Understanding the emotion helps you understand your response.
Step 3: Respond
Choose a thoughtful response instead of allowing the emotion to control your behaviour.
This simple practice can improve communication, decision-making and relationships.
In leadership, it can prevent unnecessary conflicts. In personal relationships, it can help people communicate with greater understanding.
Sometimes, a few seconds of patience can prevent hours of misunderstanding.
We live in a world where everyone wants to express an opinion, share advice or provide an immediate solution.
But how many people genuinely listen?
Active listening is an important part of emotional intelligence.
Listening does not mean waiting for the other person to finish speaking so that we can respond. It means trying to understand what the person is actually communicating.
There is often a difference between what someone says and what they are experiencing emotionally.
For example, an employee who says, “I am fine” may actually be dealing with stress, uncertainty or a lack of confidence.
A leader who listens carefully may recognise these signals and create an opportunity for an honest conversation.
Good communication is not only about choosing the right words. It is also about understanding the emotions behind those words.

Empathy is the ability to understand another person’s feelings and perspective.
It plays an important role in building trust, resolving conflicts and maintaining meaningful relationships.
However, empathy does not mean agreeing with everyone or accepting every behaviour.
This is where healthy boundaries become important.
We can understand someone’s situation without accepting inappropriate behaviour.
We can support people without taking responsibility for every problem they face.
We can be kind without compromising our own well-being.
In professional environments, emotionally intelligent leaders understand the importance of balancing compassion with accountability.
They listen to employees, understand their challenges and still maintain clarity about expectations and responsibilities.
Empathy without boundaries can become exhausting, while boundaries without empathy can damage relationships.
The ability to balance both is an important aspect of emotional maturity.
Artificial Intelligence can process enormous amounts of information, generate content, analyse data and automate repetitive activities.
It is becoming increasingly capable of supporting decision-making and improving productivity.
However, human relationships involve much more than exchanging information.
They involve emotions, trust, experiences, values and personal understanding.
Some important human qualities include:
Empathy: Understanding what another person may be experiencing.
Self-awareness: Recognising our own emotions, strengths, limitations and behavioural patterns.
Intuition: Using experience, context and subtle signals to understand situations.
Emotional connection: Building relationships through trust, understanding and shared experiences.
Compassion: Responding to another person’s difficulties with genuine concern.
Human judgement: Considering emotional, ethical and social consequences while making decisions.
AI can assist us in many of these areas, but human responsibility, authentic relationships and emotional understanding remain essential.
The future may not be about choosing between humans and machines. It will be about how effectively we combine technological intelligence with human intelligence.

Leadership is not simply about managing targets, reviewing performance or assigning responsibilities.
It is about understanding people and helping them perform at their best.
A leader’s emotional intelligence influences:
In recruitment and HR, we often focus on qualifications, experience, technical knowledge and professional achievements.
These are important factors when evaluating candidates.
However, the ability to communicate, manage emotions, work with different personalities and handle pressure also plays a significant role in professional success.
As workplaces become more technology-driven, emotional intelligence will remain an important differentiator for effective leaders and professionals.
Emotional intelligence is not something we should start developing only after entering professional life.
Its foundation begins much earlier.
Children learn emotional behaviour by observing the people around them.
When parents encourage children to express their feelings, understand different perspectives and manage disappointment, they help them develop emotional awareness.
Similarly, educational institutions can play an important role by encouraging communication, collaboration, empathy and self-confidence.
Academic knowledge prepares students for examinations and careers. Emotional intelligence prepares them for relationships, challenges and life.
In an increasingly AI-driven education system, developing human skills alongside technical knowledge will be essential.
Emotional intelligence is not a fixed quality. It can be developed through awareness, practice and consistent effort.
Here are a few practical habits to begin with:
Small improvements in everyday behaviour can create meaningful changes in personal and professional relationships.
We cannot ignore the importance of Artificial Intelligence. Professionals and organisations must learn to use technology effectively to remain relevant and competitive.
But technological capability alone will not define professional excellence.
The ability to understand people, communicate clearly, manage emotions, build trust and lead with empathy will continue to matter.
The most effective professionals of tomorrow will be those who combine technical knowledge with emotional intelligence.
AI may help us work faster, but emotional intelligence can help us work better together.

As we move towards a future where Artificial Intelligence will become part of almost every profession, we must not forget the importance of developing ourselves as human beings.
Technology can improve our efficiency, but emotional intelligence can improve our relationships, leadership and quality of life.
Perhaps the most important question we should ask ourselves is not how intelligent AI will become, but how emotionally intelligent we are willing to become.
Because in the age of AI, being human is not a weakness. It is our greatest strength.
