Have you ever accepted a job offer and later wondered, “Could I have negotiated a better salary?”
You are not alone.
Many job seekers in India hesitate to negotiate compensation. Some fear that asking for more money could make the employer withdraw the offer. Others simply accept the first number HR puts on the table because they don’t know what to say.
But here is the reality:
Getting a job offer doesn’t mean the conversation about compensation has to end.
In many cases, there is room to discuss salary, joining bonus, variable pay, benefits, flexibility, notice period or other parts of the overall package.
The key is knowing when to negotiate, what to ask for and how to communicate your expectations professionally.
If you are planning a job switch in 2026, salary negotiation is a skill worth learning.
The biggest barrier to salary negotiation is often not the employer.
It is the candidate’s fear.
Candidates commonly think:
These concerns are understandable.
But negotiation does not have to be aggressive or confrontational.
Good salary negotiation is a professional conversation about the value you bring and the compensation that reflects it.
You are not demanding more money.
You are asking whether there is flexibility.
That difference matters.
One of the biggest mistakes candidates make is treating salary negotiation like a battle where someone has to win and someone has to lose.
Instead, think about it as a discussion between two parties trying to reach an agreement.
The company wants the right person.
You want the right opportunity at the right compensation.
Both objectives can exist together.
Instead of saying:
“I won’t accept anything below ₹X.”
Try:
“Thank you for the offer. I’m genuinely interested in the role. Based on my experience, the responsibilities involved and the market range, I was expecting something closer to ₹X. Is there flexibility to move towards that?”
The second approach keeps the conversation open.
Salary negotiation becomes much stronger when you can explain why you are asking for a particular number.
Don’t base your argument on:
These may be important to you, but they don’t establish your market value.
Instead, consider:
Platforms such as AmbitionBox, Naukri and Glassdoor can provide useful reference points, although salary data should always be treated as indicative rather than absolute.
Your objective is simple:
Build a business case for your compensation.
One common mistake happens during the first HR conversation.
HR asks:
“What are your salary expectations?”
The candidate immediately gives the lowest number they would accept.
For example:
“Anything around ₹15 LPA is fine.”
That number can quickly become the anchor for the rest of the conversation.
Instead, if you still don’t understand the role, you can say:
“I’d first like to understand the role and responsibilities in more detail. Broadly, I’m looking for compensation aligned with the market and the experience I bring to the position.”
If the company insists on a number, provide a realistic range rather than an artificially low figure.
For example:
“Based on my experience and the scope of this role, I would be looking at approximately ₹18–20 LPA. I’m open to discussing the overall package based on the role and responsibilities.”
Never give a range where you would be unhappy with the lower number.
Here is a simple framework.
“What are your salary expectations?”
“Based on my experience, the responsibilities of the role and my understanding of the market, I’m looking at around ₹X–₹Y LPA. However, I’m open to discussing the overall compensation structure if there is a strong mutual fit.”
This does three things:
Don’t immediately reject the offer.
And don’t immediately accept it either.
Thank the employer first.
Then make your counteroffer.
For example:
“Thank you for sharing the offer. I’m very interested in the opportunity and appreciate the offer. Considering my experience, the scope of the role and the market range, I was expecting something closer to ₹X LPA. Is there room to move towards that figure?”
Notice the language.
You are not saying:
“This offer is too low.”
You are saying:
“I was expecting something closer to X. Is there room to move?”
That keeps the discussion constructive.
Having another offer can strengthen your negotiating position.
But don’t use it as a threat.
Avoid:
“Another company is paying me ₹X, so you need to match it.”
Instead, try:
“I do have another offer at around ₹X, but I am more interested in this opportunity because of the role and growth potential. If we can get closer to ₹Y, I’d be very comfortable moving forward.”
This communicates something important:
You are choosing the opportunity, not simply chasing the highest number.
And never invent or exaggerate another offer.
Trust can disappear very quickly if the employer discovers that the information wasn’t accurate.
Salary isn’t always the only thing that can be negotiated.
Depending on the company and role, you may also discuss:
For example, if the company cannot increase the fixed salary, you could ask:
“If there isn’t flexibility on the fixed component, would it be possible to explore a joining bonus or another component of the package?”
This is why you should look at the total compensation, not just the headline CTC.
Negotiation doesn’t mean asking for everything.
If you push aggressively on salary, joining date, leave, remote work, bonus and every other benefit simultaneously, you may create unnecessary friction.
Prioritize what matters most to you.
For example:
Priority 1: Fixed salary
Priority 2: Joining bonus
Priority 3: Flexible working arrangement
Know your priorities before entering the conversation.
There is one simple communication technique that many candidates underestimate:
Silence.
After making a reasonable salary request, don’t immediately start explaining yourself.
For example:
“Based on the role, my experience and the market range, I was expecting ₹20 LPA. Is there flexibility to move towards that?”
Then stop.
Let HR respond.
Candidates often become uncomfortable with silence and start negotiating against themselves:
“Actually, ₹19 would also be okay… or maybe ₹18.5…”
Don’t do that.
Make your case clearly.
Then listen.
Freshers often assume they have no negotiating power.
Your leverage may be smaller, but you can still ask professionally.
For example:
“Thank you for the offer. I’m excited about the opportunity. Based on the market range for this role and the skills I bring, would there be any flexibility in the offered compensation?”
Even if the answer is no, you have learned an important professional skill.
The objective isn’t always to get a higher number.
Sometimes it is simply to have a professional conversation about your value.
For experienced candidates, the conversation should move beyond the current CTC.
Your previous salary is one data point.
It should not automatically define your future value.
If HR says:
“We can offer you a 25% hike on your current CTC.”
You can respond:
“I understand the percentage based approach. However, I’d also like to look at the compensation in relation to the responsibilities of this role, the experience required and the market range. Could we discuss the package from that perspective?”
This shifts the conversation from:
Current CTC → Percentage hike
to:
Role → Value → Market → Compensation
That can lead to a more meaningful discussion.
Even if you are happy with the offer, take a little time to review the complete package.
Research before quoting.
Your financial responsibilities are important, but they are not a strong compensation argument.
Negotiation is not confrontation.
Never create a fake offer or exaggerate your current compensation.
Your credibility is worth more than a short term salary increase.
Before you negotiate, know these five numbers:
1. Current CTC
What are you currently earning?
2. Target CTC
What would make you genuinely happy with the move?
3. Market Range
What does the market indicate for similar roles?
4. Minimum Acceptable Number
What is the lowest package at which you would realistically accept?
5. Total Compensation
What is the complete value of the offer beyond fixed salary?
Once you know these numbers, you can negotiate with much more confidence.
If you want one simple script to remember, use this:
“Thank you for the offer. I’m genuinely interested in the role and excited about the opportunity. Based on my experience, the responsibilities of the position and the market range, I was expecting compensation closer to ₹X LPA. Is there flexibility to move towards that figure?”
Then listen.
If they can’t move on fixed salary:
“I understand. Are there other components of the overall package that we could explore?”
Simple.
Professional.
No confrontation.
Salary negotiation isn’t about asking for money just because you can.
It is about understanding your market value, communicating it professionally and having the confidence to ask a reasonable question.
You don’t have to be aggressive.
You don’t have to threaten the employer.
You don’t have to make unrealistic demands.
You simply need to be prepared.
Because sometimes the difference between accepting an average offer and getting a better package isn’t another qualification.
It’s having the confidence to ask:
“Is there room to move?”
So, before you say YES to your next job offer, take a moment.
Understand the complete package.
Do your research.
Know your number.
And negotiate professionally.
What is the one salary number you are afraid to ask for?
