While the necessity of a cover letter may vary depending on the company and industry, it is still commonly requested by many employers. Cover letters provide an opportunity for applicants to express their interest in the job and demonstrate their suitability for the role in a more personalized manner than a resume alone. Thus, they can be important for making a strong first impression and standing out among other candidates.<\/em><\/h3>\n<h2>How to create the best cover letter<\/h2>\n<p>As a career counselor, I\u2019ve reviewed thousands of cover letters for hundreds of different positions. Give me a quick glance at your cover letter, and I can tell you the effect it will have on a reader.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s why I wrote this article: to explain how to write your cover letter in a way that gives you the best chance of landing work. Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Target the role<\/h3>\n<p>First, if you want to make a strong pitch, you should <strong>target the job directly<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAt the very least, that means you <em>need<\/em> to refer to the position by name, and make it clear that this isn\u2019t a cover letter you\u2019ve sent out to multiple companies. A hiring manager wants to know what you can do for <em>their<\/em> company, so if you don\u2019t address your cover letter to their needs, it\u2019ll be trashed.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"tip\">Tip<\/p>\n<div class=\"tip-right\">Applying to numerous jobs? Using the right kind of general cover letter can save you time and make your job search more efficient.<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h3>2. Respond to the job requirements<\/h3>\n<p>If you really want to make an impression, <strong>respond to one or more bullet points from the job description<\/strong>, and outline how you can fulfill each requirement. This shows you that you can handle the duties of the job, and hit the ground running on your first day.<br \/>\nAlso write about what attracted you to <em>this particular role<\/em> in the first place. When you do this, don\u2019t talk about salary numbers or perks, but rather something that makes you excited to work for the company.<br \/>\nAdditionally, you could point out a problem you\u2019ve noticed it\u2019s facing \u2014 one that <em>you\u2019d<\/em> be able to fix.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"blockquote\">Write about what attracted you to this particular role in the first place.<\/aside>\n<p>You can also mention an interesting fact that you\u2019ve learned about the company or position, such as a bit of information you picked up from reading the news. This will prove that you\u2019re motivated and detail oriented.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Craft a great cover letter opening line<\/h3>\n<p>Use one of these ideas for the opening sentence of your cover letter. You only get one chance at making a first impression after all. Since it\u2019s the <em>first thing<\/em> the hiring manager will read, you\u2019ll need an opener that immediately hooks them.<br \/>\nCheck out this example:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-black alignnone\" title=\"border-black\" src=\"https:\/\/www.postaresume.co.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/best-cover-letters-of-2020.png\" alt=\"Excerpt from a cover letter: With six years of experience in full-stack web development and systems architecture, I am confident I will be an excellent fit for Haystack Search\u2019s next Senior Software Engineer.\" width=\"796\" height=\"100\" \/><br \/>\nThis opening line is <em>much more effective<\/em> than starting your cover letter with the dull sentence \u201cI am writing to apply for [Position Name]\u201d. A strong introduction will show the hiring manager that you\u2019ve done your homework.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"blockquote\">Think of your cover letter as your elevator pitch in written form.<\/aside>\n<p>By customizing your cover letter to the role, you\u2019ll immediately set yourself apart from the vast majority of applicants whose letters <em>don\u2019t<\/em> address the company\u2019s needs. When composing your cover letter, think of it as your elevator pitch in written form.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"3-best-examples\">The 3 best cover letters.<\/h2>\n<p>Millions \u2014 if not <em>billions<\/em> \u2014 of cover letters have been sent out, but only a small fraction of them are cover letters that work and that have landed an applicant a job. Thanks to the internet, hiring managers have shared some of the amazing cover letters they\u2019ve encountered.<\/p>\n<h3>The consummate professional<\/h3>\n<p>In this great cover letter example, the applicant landed a job as a project manager by proving they had the required skills and experience in a short but effective cover letter. Their professionalism and humor shines through. Notably, they know how to address a cover letter to the person they\u2019d be reporting to, rather than using the generic \u201cTo Whom It May Concern,\u201d which is the best way to get things started<\/p>\n<aside class=\"blockquote\">You need to clarify how you meet every one of the job requirements in your cover letter.<\/aside>\n<p>This approach may not be the best if you already have a lot of experience under your belt. But it\u2019s perfect for an entry-level position, since all of the candidates will have similar backgrounds. A good cover letter will get read \u2014 a great cover letter <em>will land you an interview<\/em>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"tip\">Tip<\/p>\n<div class=\"tip-right\">For jobs with a more professional, corporate culture, stick to a basic cover letter template to give your application a refined, no-nonsense appearance.<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h3>The compassionate candidate<\/h3>\n<p>This awesome cover letter left a strong impression by showcasing the writer\u2019s zest for life. Their compassion toward people and animals in particular makes them a desirable employee. Their cover letter also shows that despite working in entry-level roles, they still helped to <strong>fulfill organizational goals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"blockquote\">A good cover letter will get read \u2014 a great cover letter<em> will land you an interview<\/em>.<\/aside>\n<h3>The much-improved applicant<\/h3>\n<p>The author of this wordy cover letter was horrified to reread it after finding it buried in their email outbox several years after submitting it.<br \/>\nTheir original cover letter was difficult to read because of its length and lackluster content. It simply repeated the bullets on their resume, and didn\u2019t showcase their passion or interest in the role. So they asked experts to rewrite it.<br \/>\nThe redone version is <em>much<\/em> more readable, since it has short, easy-to-read paragraphs and an impactful opening line.
